Why I Fired Myself as a Virtual Assistant

Firing myself was one of the best decisions I’ve made.

Alright, so not to be so dramatic, buuuuut....

I knew when I rolled into 2021 that I had lots more dreams for my growing business and I felt like I was juggling ALL the hats;

✅ Agency Owner & Boss

✅ Business Coach

✅ Occasional OBM

✅ Hands on VA

The only one of those roles which was beginning to feel like the one I truly wanted to release was the hands on VA work. I kept saying 'it keeps me honest' if I'm still doing the client work.

One of  the reasons I held onto it for so long was that I saw so many Coaches out there who had never spent a single second being an actual VA or service provider (it’s mind boggling, but sadly happens), yet had the audacity to sell their services as VA Coaches.

I figured, keeping a foot in the VA work kept me honest.

Truth be told, I was damn FRAZZLED.

My business was three, yes that’s three wonderful years of being a VA, going through every single scenario with services, work, clients - good and bad - that you could ever imagine. Yet, so much had shifted, I wasn’t doing it alone, I had built and trained a team of VAs and OBMs now.

But doing the hands on work myself, was the one piece of the puzzle that really tied me down. I knew the rest of the work I was doing outside of being a VA would allow me to shape my days so much more, I was ready. SO ready to have a little more flex in the schedule.

It doesn't mean it was easy (lots of nail biting).

My last client is truly a gorgeous unicorn and the type of dream client we all wish for. A genius, humble and smart AF - a change maker and a champion of women and so I stayed with her six months longer than planned because I utterly adore her... but I stopped making excuses because I knew I was getting the huffs and the sighs when the work kept coming.

It was time. She was a dream about it (of course she was!) and the timing was perfect, I had begun working with a new team member six months before, someone who when she came to me had only ever been an office based PA and was new to the VA world, but I saw ALL her potential and she took to it like a duck to water,  and damn I knew she’d be epic at VA life and she is.

So, with immense gratitude (and a tonne of relief) for having such an incredible woman on my team, she tagged me out and took over the client within my agency and is doing a stellar job to this day.

I feel like a free woman, I am showing up for my team and my coaching clients better than I have ever done. It lights me up because I’ve got a renewed passion for everything. It’s also everything I can show, teach and empower my Coaching clients to do as well. We can lay down one thing, we truly don’t have to do it alone if we build that support around us.

Even my email list can see because I’m writing to them every single week, vs so sporadically before.

Now I get to run my agency with more energy and my team get more of me, the VA clients are happy and a little more looked after too. My schedule’s set up the way I always wanted, I mean one week where I have calls on set days, so I have so much more energy and I love it and one week with zero calls but so much time for creativity and just focusing on supporting and growing everything behind the scenes - can you imagine? I know my fellow introverts will appreciate this!

I have space, for those days when everything feels hard and my energy just runs away from me. I’ve got the time to just sit back a little and not force it. It’s wonderful.

So, tell me what change would you make today in your business that you may have been putting off, if you knew it would all work for the better? What's the one thing you know will make you feel lighter to release?
